The start of the 2014-2015 school year has been very busy and fun!

In Language Arts the sixth graders have been reviewing language conventions and learning new academic vocabulary. We have also been comparing and contrasting literary genres and read a fantasy novel, either Tuck Everlasting or Bridge to Terabithia and are currently finishing a mystery novel, The Westing Game.

In social studies the students have been learning the political map of the United States and have completed a State Fair Project including writing a research paper. Below are pictures from the state fair project process and from the State Fair Exhibition the fifth and sixth graders hosted.

The Birchbark House

Before winter break the students read the historical fiction novel, The Birchbark House by Louise Erdrich. The students created dioramas illustrating a scene from the novel.

Trimester One- Field Trip & Family Event

The students had a great time on our field trip to an apple farm! They students picked apples, made apple cider, and enjoyed a hayride.

Later that night the students and their families were invited back for the 5/6 family event where they carved pumpkins, had fall snacks, and socialized.

Third Week of School

This week the students review prefixes, suffixes, and base/root words. The students engaged in various activities making words from prefix, suffix, root/base word cards (and sometimes making up new words and what they would mean!)

Word Work began this week. The students have various strategies throughout the week to help them practice their words. This week we did word sign, rainbow write, and ABC order. Their assessment is Friday.

The students also began Social Studies this week, as well. They got to know their textbook with a textbook scavenger hunt and began learning about United States Geography.
